Newark Airport: The Best NYC Airport You're Not Using Enough

Ask most travelers which airport to fly into for New York City, and they will say JFK. Ask experienced New York business travelers, and a significant number will say EWR. Newark Liberty International Airport is closer to Manhattan than JFK for many destinations, often has cheaper fares, and handles a substantial share of the international routes served by United Airlines and its Star Alliance partners. This guide covers everything you need to know about EWR — and why the right car service is especially important here.

EWR vs JFK vs LGA: How Do They Compare?

  • Location — EWR is in Newark, NJ, about 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan. JFK is in Queens, about 15 miles from Midtown. LGA is in Queens, about 8 miles from Midtown.
  • Travel time to Midtown — EWR: 30 to 45 minutes. JFK: 40 to 60 minutes. LGA: 20 to 40 minutes.
  • International routes — EWR is a major United Airlines hub with extensive international service. JFK handles more international carriers overall. LGA is primarily domestic.
  • Downtown Manhattan — EWR is often faster to Lower Manhattan and the Financial District via the Holland Tunnel route than JFK is via the BQE.
  • Fares — EWR frequently has competitive fares, particularly on United and international partners. Worth checking when JFK fares are high.

EWR Terminal Guide

Newark has three terminals — A, B, and C — connected by an AirTrain that also links to the NJ Transit rail station.

  • Terminal A — Domestic and international flights from a range of carriers. Recently renovated. American Airlines, Frontier, and select international carriers.
  • Terminal B — International arrivals hall. Also handles some domestic. Older terminal but functional.
  • Terminal C — United Airlines hub. The busiest terminal at EWR. Handles the majority of United domestic and international flights.

When booking a car service, always provide your terminal and flight number. Your chauffeur will confirm the correct meeting point inside the terminal.

The Route from EWR to Manhattan: NJ Turnpike vs Surface Streets

The two main routes from Newark Airport to Manhattan each have tradeoffs:

Lincoln Tunnel (via NJ Turnpike / Route 3)

The Lincoln Tunnel is the primary route for most EWR to Midtown Manhattan transfers. It deposits you at 38th to 42nd Street on the West Side. Travel time from EWR to Midtown via Lincoln Tunnel is typically 30 to 45 minutes off-peak, and 45 to 65 minutes during rush hour. Tolls are approximately $17 for passenger vehicles.

Holland Tunnel (via Pulaski Skyway or Routes 1 & 9)

The Holland Tunnel connects to Lower Manhattan, making it the better choice for Financial District, Tribeca, and SoHo destinations. It can also be faster for downtown-bound travelers when the Lincoln Tunnel is backed up. Holland Tunnel toll is approximately $17 as well.

Why Toll Surprises Are Common with Uber at EWR

This is one of the most important practical points for EWR travelers: ride-share apps frequently show a base fare that does not include tolls, and then add them at the end of the trip. An Uber from EWR to Manhattan that appears to be $50 in the app can become $67 after the Lincoln Tunnel toll is added. If traffic forces a route change to a different toll structure, the final amount can differ from expectations.

Eagle Eye Chauffeur's flat-rate pricing for EWR transfers includes all tolls. The price you are quoted is the price you pay — no toll surcharges, no surprises on your receipt.

Late-Night EWR Pickups

Newark Airport handles a significant number of late-night international arrivals — flights from Europe, Asia, and South America that land between 10 PM and 2 AM. At these hours, NJ Transit train service becomes less frequent, taxi availability drops, and rideshare drivers are scarcer in the Newark area. A pre-booked black car service is particularly valuable for late-night EWR arrivals. Your driver is confirmed, tracking your flight, and waiting regardless of the hour.

Travel Times from EWR to Common Destinations

  • Upper East or West Side — 40 to 55 minutes
  • MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford — 15 to 25 minutes
